No Flight Plan is the life story of an adopted midwestern boy, who turned childhood illness and uncertainty into uncharted journeys in the wider world. He adopted an attitude of “what’s the worst that could happen?” as his guide star. This led to unexpected international adventures, uncommon leadership challenges, and poetry. From university teaching in Peace Corps Thailand, to a year of living dangerously at a university in Iran, to an idyllic college on a mountain in Greece, he took chances. When his life swerved into the corporate corridors of IBM, his solo international adventure trips continued and, as a single father, he took his two boys on exploration trips around the U.S. His IBM life pivoted again with the startup of a new Peace Corps program in Kazakhstan - an uncertain venture at best - and a USAID job traveling throughout Russia. He spiraled back to IBM in Jakarta on a gamble: a new undertaking with travel to every corner of the Asia Pacific countries. In retirement he led a disaster response non-profit in Haiti, the Philippines, Japan, and the U.S.In “what’s the worst that could happen?” the worst rarely happens. The joy is in discovering that taking chances expands your limits, and that uncertainty can be exciting. Failure is learning, discovery is sweet and surprising, and luck is abundant when chancing the unpredictable. From Kenya to Tibet, and Brazil to Antarctica, living life in full is about new adventures. No Flight Plan is a life story and legacy for family and friends. It’s also a virtual travelogue of adventures in dozens of countries and a testament to jumping at opportunities instead of standing on the sidelines.
