Luke Jarrett, a career journalist turned academic, has just been stunned by a great personal tragedy. He finds himself in the middle of a cross-country road trip, embarking on a long journey of recovery. Coincidentally, these are also the last five years of the 20th Century. Haunted by his loss, he unwittingly places himself squarely in the midst of an even greater tragedy: the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Jarrett returns to his role of reporter and, in chronicling the misery and resolve of others, finds help in dealing with his own devastation. The experience helps him gain his footing, and he moves to Memphis for a new faculty post and encounters more stumbling blocks to personal wholeness because of the twin traumas he has just endured.. But he also finds greater professional success and a renewed confidence which helps to strengthen his resolve to find a way out of a tragic era and into a new tomorrow. Oklahoma City had become his life's pivot point. Now if he can just find a lasting inner peace.
